Ex-Newcastle United footballer Nile Ranger has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

 

The 21-year-old was held following reports of a fight between a couple in Newcastle city centre yesterday evening.

 

The former England Under-19s player is helping police with their inquiries following the alleged assault in the car park of The Gate entertainment complex.

 

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At 7.09pm yesterday evening, police received a report of a fight in the car park area at The Gate, Newcastle.

 

"A 21-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault and he is currently in custody helping police with inquiries."

 

The troubled striker left Newcastle after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent earlier this month.

 

A statement from the club on March 1 said: "Newcastle United can confirm that Nile Ranger has today left the club by mutual consent."

Northumbria Police confirmed on Monday that the 22-year-old, who was released by the club in March, has been formally charged over an alleged incident at a Jesmond hotel on January 23.

Ranger will appear before Newcastle magistrates on August 21.

A statement from the police read: "Nile Ranger, 22, of Bailey Close, Harringay, London, has been charged with rape.

"He is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court on August 21.”

Ranger signed for Newcastle in July 2008 and spent loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley before leaving the club having made five league starts.
